Project Details

Stephen Grindrod LTD was appointed in 2020 by the custodians of this Quaker meeting house to assist in essential restorative works. Built in 1725, Rookhow is a Grade II* listed building with some original features still on show. This project is a wonderful example of how clients, architects, builders, and the local authority can work together for the common interest of protecting and restoring a historic building.

Like many heritage properties, Rookhow suffered from dampness which created a cold and unhealthy space for the occupants. The initial phase of work focused on repairs to prevent further damage, these included sensitive repairs to the roof, chimneys, and windows, using traditional and local materials; A French drain was also installed to help take water away from the building.

Detail

In the interest of preserving the building and in support of its continued use, an air source heat pump with an underfloor heating system was installed. The low-level, continuous heat provided by this system helps to balance moisture levels throughout the building fabric, whilst also creating a comfortable meeting space. The original slate floorwas carefully removed and an insulated, breathable limecrete floor was installed as part of the underfloor heating work. With the original floor slabs replaced and repointed with lime, it is no wonder the building users enjoy walking barefoot in this space!

The work at Rookhow is ongoing with additional conservation and improvement by Stephen Grindrod LTD on the neighbouring bunkhouse as well as future works planned for further repair and restoration of the main building.
