Project Details

Stephen Grindrod LTD was appointed by the owners of a farmhouse in the Rusland Valley to convert an agricultural building into a comfortable dwelling. As the building had originally been constructed with breathable, local materials, the approach to conversion needed to reflect this to ensure the longevity of the structure.

The team at Stephen Grindrod LTD worked with the client and planning authority to specify appropriate materials for the job.

The existing structure was repaired and repointed with lime and structural works were undertaken to accommodate new, larger windows which provided natural light into the living spaces.

To take the building from cattle barn to cosy home, the ground floor was excavated and a replaced with a limecrete floor, insulated with recycled foam glass. This included underfloor heating pipes which linked to a new ground source heat pump, providing sustainable heating for both the barn and existing farmhouse. Combining this with triple glazed windows and the additional breathable wall and roof insulation, the project has resulted in a comfortable and stable internal environment.

When adding insulation to an older building, it is important to consider how this will affect the existing structure. At Lands End Farm, an insulating lime plaster was spray applied to the internal face of the walls. Stephen Grindrod LTD are trained installers of Diathonite insulating plasters.

A high level of finish was achieved with detailed joinery and lime plaster throughout.
