Project Details
Crag Howe is a solid stone property dating back to the 1700’s. Stephen Grindrod LTD was appointed as contractor to return the property to its former glory after years of damage caused by non-breathable materials.
The dampness present in this property is a common example of how cement-based materials can trap moisture within a building and create long-term problems. Damp walls are not only cold, but they often lead to mold growth, which can be harmful to the health of the occupants.
Detail
Removing the concrete floor and cement-based plaster from the internal walls allowed the building to start breathing again. A limecrete floor with recycled foam glass insulation was used to create a breathable solid floor which helps to manage moisture in the building. An insulating hemp-lime plaster was used on the walls to provide warmth while allowing the solid stone walls to regulate moisture naturally.
